Will The Nest 2.0 Change Home Heating And Air Forever?
The Nest 2.0 is the latest version of the intelligent and energy-saving home thermostat that controls your home’s temperature with a simple twist of the dial. It is self-programmable and has a contemporary, elegant look (no more white plastic rectangles on the walls.)
What makes the Nest 2.0 unique is its learning capabilities. Each time the dial is set at a certain time of day, the glowing display reads ‘learning’ and programs itself to set the temperature appropriately on consecutive days.
However, is the Nest so different from traditional programmable home thermostats? We will take a closer look at its features to help understand this product better.
Take A Look at The Video Below Showcasing The Features of the Nest
Thermostats control at least half of the home’s energy bill. Insulation, building materials and daily habits are the other major contributors. Therefore, it pays to invest in a thermostat capable of reducing this bill as much as possible. The Nest 2.0’s features do just that. By learning the appropriate temperature settings to adjust to in the morning, during the day and after the lights are out, it takes the human error out of the equation. After all, we all know adjusting our thermostat saves money, but how often do we remember to do it? In addition, the Nest displays an energy-efficient leaf icon when the temperature is set to reduce energy costs, much like a green ‘eco’ light in an energy efficient car. The Nest will learn:
- What time the homeowners wake up
- When they go to bed
- When they are away
In other words, the Nest thermostat creates a homeowner temperature schedule. It continues to learn throughout the year, or more specifically, every time the dial is turned.
One of the biggest energy wasters in a home is forgetting to adjust the temperature while we are out. The Nest manufacturers claim that the auto-away feature can help save up to 20 % on household energy bills and works on 90% of homes. Auto-away uses sensors covering 150 degrees to sense movement in the home. Within the first week, the Nest should learn when it is safe to turn on the auto-away function and when to power up again. This feature can also be manually set, but will normally turn on after a couple of hours of inactivity. To accommodate different users, the Nest 2.0 will:
- Adjust to busy schedules. It will learn to activate auto-away for busy mornings and dormant afternoons, for example
- Adjust to home workers. Once it learns that there is a low level of activity throughout the day, the Nest will wait longer before turning on auto-away
The Nest 2.0 is a revolutionary concept, or at least it is a better mousetrap. The benefits of using this device are many, with the greatest being the reduction of energy used and the monetary savings. It is also in step with today’s technology and able to be controlled by a Smartphone from (almost) anywhere. While the thermostat may not be a new concept, the Nest 2.0 does one thing better than any thermostat has in the past; it makes energy saving extremely convenient.
